History of the FDNY

The first organized firefighting service began in 1648 when the first Fire Ordinance was adopted by the Dutch Settlement of New Amsterdam.

In 1658 The bucket brigade's was formed. The units were equipped with 250 leather bucket's that were made by dutch shoe makers.

In 1731 the first fire unit was put into service, 74 years after the buket brigades were formed. The first fire engines that were used were two hand pulled pumpers that were brought over from london. They were designated Engine 1 and Engine 2. They were the first volunteer fire companies.

After the american revolution the department was reorganized and the New York City fire department was formed.

When steam engines and horses were starting to be used, it eliminated the need to pull and put the water.

The volunteer companies were later over come buy paid companies.
